Wonderful weirdos: mushrooms of British Columbia

posted in: nature | 0

Nature is filled with wonderful weirdos, mushrooms (fungi in general) being a great example. British Columbia has lots of mushrooms. They are all weird. Here are a few of my favourites seen this year. I’ve saved the absolute weirdest weirdo for the end.

Everyone loves the classic toadstool mushroom, Amanita muscaria. Unless you eat it, then you’re sad.

Many mushrooms have gills. They’re not just for fish. Or people named Gil.

Some fungus look like delicious shiny candy, others like shriveled poo. The poo kind are often the most delicious and not deadly, so I’m told. So it is.

And now, the most spectacular weirdo of them all:

Bleeding tooth fungus Hydnellum peckii
OMG, is that mushroom bleeding?! AAAAAAHHHHHH, demon mushroom! Wait, maybe I’m over-reacting. Let’s check the guidebook…

Oh, ok, it’s not a demon. It’s the most spectacular weirdo of them all, Hydnellum peckii, the ‘bleeding tooth’ fungus. Only the young specimens exude the blood-red liquid. Demon crisis averted. I probably didn’t need to squish them all.

Zero doesn’t know what to make of her distant fungal cousin, the bleeding tooth fungus (Hydnellum peckii)

Have you seen any super-cool fungus this year? Do you know their actual names or do you make them up like I do? If you know any of the real names for fungus shown here, please share!
