Hello and Welcome!

I am a biologist, teacher, curriculum developer, and all-around nature nerd. In the last few years I’ve lived in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Vancouver, British Columbia and now Monterey, California.  I find delight in all things odd. In fact, you might find me odd.

If you would like to know more about my academic background and professional interests, please see my CV. You can also check out my old blog, FrizzyB. You can contact me by email or social media:

My goals for this website are to:

  • provide a platform to express and advocate various personal interests, both serious and silly. These include: science communication and outreach,  gender equality, adventures around Vancouver and British Columbia, pop culture, literature and more.
  • practice and improve my writing and photography skills through sharing my work online.

Here are a hodgepodge of things about me:
I grew up on the seashore, on Vancouver Island, covered in sand and dragging home the latest dead creature swept ashore by the tide. One time I brought a dead dogfish home, but it wasn’t dead, and I screamed when it wriggled back to life. The terror of a zombie shark can never be forgotten.

I spent six years living in New Brunswick while I completed my PhD. I studied the diversity of red seaweeds in Canada and was lucky enough to discover several new species. One of them I named after the filmmaker, Tim Burton, called Euthora timburtonii.

I am an avid consumer of pop culture, especially television, movies and video games. Until recently, I merely consumed media without being aware of, or critical of, the impacts it has on our society. The misrepresentation of women—the general lack of women and hypersexualization of those present—and the consequences this misrepresentation has on young girls and our society in general, is an issue of growing importance to me.
